    1. A real fan of Anne Perry's Monk series, this is early on in getting to know the enigmatic Monk. Perry has the ability to weave magic with her distinctive style and I found myself swaying between compassion and frustration towards Monk and his difficult character. His character is his weakness but also his strength and the delightful tug of war between him and Hester, equally strong willed in her own unique way, is delightful. His loss of memory renders him more humaine and I couldn't help but be [...]

    2. In the third book of the William Monk series, we find Hester Latterly involved in a bizarre murder. A respected general has been killed, first falling off a balcony, then stabbed with a halberd from the nearby suit of armor. The man's wife confesses to the murder, attributing to her jealousy over the man's affair with another woman. Hester doesn't believe it and has Oliver Rathbone engaged as the woman's attorney. He hires Monk to investigate the crime, especially to find the real murderer and/o [...]

    3. I always find this author's books to be insightful, with enough suspense and depth to keep you guessing. I love the dynamics of Hester, Monk and Rathbone. Each of them are brilliant with definitive personalities. The facts of this story take a while to emerge and unfold but the discoveries and conclusion are well worth the read.

    4. The premise of this murder mystery pulled me right in. A very unusual freak accident turns into a murder mystery which quickly turns into an intense investigation limited by the time of an impending hanging. The story unfolds page by page with new questions and uncomfortable wonderings about what dark evil has been committed. I have never read a book quite like this one for substance and circumstance. At the end you are going to be feeling something more than just having read a good book.

    5. I've now read the first three of Anne Perry's William Monk novels and enjoyed them all. This one however I found so emotionally drenching in the last fifty or so pages I will never forget it.

    6. I wanted to read the ending (but I didn't) because it was so suspenseful. I almost forgot about Monk and his memory problem. I don't know what he will do in the future, so I will have to keep reading!
